Chorus moves in with the
opera, and into the mainstream
At the beginning of its fifth season, the Columbus Gay Mens Chorus finds itself on the threshold of change. The chorus' recent move to the Opera Columbus facility along with its fall performance with Columbus' Pro Musica and the early summer release of its first professional recording mark the beginning of the transition from a gay community group to a Colum-
bus arts group.
"Our mission statement is three-
""
fold,' explained Chorus President Randy Carr. "The mission sets forth our pledge to provide a family-like community for our members; to produce the highest quality music possible utilizing the talents of the members of our community and to act as a bridge, culturally and socially, to the greater central Ohio community."
By sharing the Opera Columbus facility, Carr likened the bond to a mentoring relationship. "The move to the facility allows our organization to
professional recording effort. Available in both CD and tape formats, the recording will represent a compilation of chorus favorites from the past five years.
"Other, more established choruses have

tap into the talents of a recognized mainline arts establishment while maintaining our autonomy." In sharing the facility, the chorus has access to rehearsal and box office facilities and office space.
"The move and our upcoming events such as our participation in Pro Musica's fall concert are helping us move beyond a local 'gay' group. We are working to push beyond that label to have the chorus become a bigger player in the Columbus arts community." The Chorus' guest artist status in Pro Musica's fall concert will allow the group to display its talents to members of an audience which may not have been exposed to the group's ability. "The appearance with Pro Musica is another opportunity to share our talents, not only for the benefit of chamber group, but also for the exposure of our talents to the community as a whole."
Further exposure of those talents will appear early in the summer of 1995 with the release of Stepping Out, the group's first

made recordings. We are the youngest choral group of our kind to undertake this type of project," Carr added with pride. "This recording will draw on our talents from all angles, from singing to fundraising."
Currently, the chorus is seeking community support of donations for the effort and pre-sale of the recording. As a nonprofit organization, contributions to the recording effort may qualify for tax deductible status.
In addition to the Pro Musica concert and the planned recording sessions for Stepping Out, Carr said that the Chorus will begin promoting its regular concert schedule this fall. "By incorporating the guest performance and the recording sessions, in addition to our regular planned concerts, we have undertaken what many groups would consider a very aggressive season."

Finally, a comedy that will change the way you think, the way you feel, and most importantly...
the way you dress.
